Do You End Backsplash At Cabinet Or Countertop
Camila Farah
Many homeowners stop their backsplash level with the bottom of their upper cabinets.
The upper cabinet isn t taken far enough down the wall ultimately causing you to end up with the awkward situation of countertop needing a splash in a rather long segment with no uppers to run the backsplash into. Thank you for making the argument for backsplash or no backsplash. I would end it at countertop as that is what back splash is for. I recommend lining your tile backsplash up with your upper cabinets.
If you install kitchen backsplash in areas where it isn t needed violates the aesthetics of a functional living space. I do admit not having one tends to make the kitchen look unfinished in some of the photos or a vintage vibe. Ending at cabinet would look odd. Open space gives your eyes and wallet a break.
End at the counter but put floating shelve above lining up with bottom top middle of cabinet so it doesn t look off center. You can extend the tile beyond the cabinets but this marks a logical ending for the backsplash. In this instance i went a bit. When the tile installation is complete you can remove the support.

Ending with the cabinet usually is a cleaner straighter line. If you haven t selected your tile yet i added a few options for you to consider. Same rule apples for all design styles. If you ve read my blog much or if you have my backsplash bible you probably know what i m going to advise here.
Then the backsplash has a definitive edge at which to end. Simply screw in a board on the wall even with the countertop across the space where the counter is missing. Simple is best if there are layers elsewhere not every corner of our home needs to be styled. You can either finish it off with decorative tile trim wood bracket or have the tile laid in a straight line to the counter.
This is no problem when installing a backsplash over a countertop but when you tile behind appliances such as your range there s no counter for support. I received yet another question on where to end a kitchen backsplash from the new owner of this cute kitchen. Backsplash should be placed threw whole location of your kitchen countertop area. If you end with the end of the counter you ll have to finish the top of the backsplash where it sticks out past the cabinet.
