It can also wear down the glaze on porcelain crowns.

The receding gums expose the cementum which is softer than the enamel that covers the crown of the tooth therefore it s more prone to decay as well as structural damage from brushing too hard and using products that are too abrasive. If you brush too hard or leave the paste on your teeth too long you could risk damage to the enamel of your teeth. If you have a permanent retainer or braces with orthodontic glue do not use sodium bicarbonate to brush your teeth because it will weaken the glue over time. Baking soda is fine to use to keep stains off your teeth during braces but it is pretty abrasive and normally not recommended for daily use.

Using a toothpaste with sodium bicarbonate is the best way to reap the dental benefits of baking soda. I d suggest avoiding any bleaching of your teeth while the braces are on as the enamel under the brackets won t change color and you could end up with dark spots. However baking soda is quite abrasive so it is better to use a less abrasive medium such as toothpaste. Even best is to use a toothpaste with fluoride for its protective benefits.

But there are a few spots where its hard for me to always get the way they have my braces so i have been trying to. It is possible to brush with baking soda either with or without braces. If you want to use baking soda to remove some stains on occasion it is okay to use it but not daily. According to colgate brushing with baking soda is not recommended for people with braces that contain orthodontic glue your dentist will advise you accordingly or permanent retainers.

Keeping your teeth clean is the key to not having issues later when the braces come off. Scrubbing your teeth vigorously with baking soda can cause damage to the tooth. Fluoride is also an important element for fighting cavities and it s not present in baking soda toothpaste. Baking soda is an abrasive which means it can damage your gums.

Baking soda is good for managing gum issues but it lacks fluoride which is helpful to prevent decay especially while wearing braces. I dont think there is going to be any harm to your teeth because a lot of people use baking soda to whiten teeth but just know that you will end up with two toned teeth when your braces come off. People with braces and other orthodontic appliances may find their attachments can be loosened when regularly using baking soda toothpaste. The only thing id watch is i heard from my orthodontist to stay away from stuff that stains teeth and whitens because if your teeth get more whitened then what they used to be then your going to end up with those annoying squares on your teeth from the braces when they come off.

Baking soda can loosen the glue and cause these dental devices to fall not to mention that the reaction involved can leave you with darker spots.
