Is There A Difference Between Heavy Cream And Whipping Cream
Olivia Luz
These seemingly similar varieties of cream contain different amounts of milkfat which can create very different products.
The food and drug administration maintains labeling standards for both types of cream. Heavy cream has at least 36 percent milk fat. Heavy cream has a higher fat content than whipping cream coming in at 36 percent while whipping cream only requires 30 percent fat. When it comes to fat six percent makes a difference.
Light whipping cream also just called whipping cream contains between 30 to 36 percent milk fat. If you re having trouble keeping that straight just remember that if you see the word heavy you re dealing with a slightly higher fat content. Heavy cream contains about 38 40 of fat whereas whipping cream has just 30 to 36 of fat content. Heavy cream has slightly more milkfat than whipping cream 36 versus 30 and each cup of heavy whipping cream contains more than 800 calories and 80 grams of fat.
As it turns out the major distinction between heavy cream and whipping cream is the fat content. Whipped cream is prepared out of heavy cream through a process of severe whisking. Used in the preparation of sour cream and clotted cream. Try heavy cream in cream puffs creamed peas or zabaglione.
