Should Wood Floors Be Horizontal Or Vertical
Camila Farah
Apart from a few exceptions like sagging joists this is the preferred direction to lay wood floors because it aesthetically provides the best result.
Whenever you are placing wood flooring in a hallway or any long and narrow area it should run in the direction away from the doorway. If the room is narrow such as a hallway a corridor or a long kitchen planks should run the length of the room. So there is no right or wrong way to lay your wood flooring. More modern homes have a floor joist system and a subfloor.
This will make the floors structurally sound and will help prevent the planks from separating sagging or buckling. The preference has always been installing perpendicular to the joists as it provides stronger support for the floor going over it. Well maybe not that great but i mentioned to the hubster how i would like to lay the new flooring horizontally instead of vertically. I also figured since we are doing floating wood floors it would be easier to keep them lined up.
Consider the room shape. The wood will lead people to the kitchen main living area or whatever. Which direction should i lay it where should i start. Many factors determine the overall look of a wood floor including the species of wood the quality of its grain and finish the size and consistency of the individual courses and possibly the most noticeable the direction or pattern of the layout.

Structural considerations wood floors should always be laid perpendicular to floor joists across rather that in between them. If the room is not overly small floorboards that are placed vertically will work just fine. Note that horizontal and vertical aren t the only options vinyl plank and wood floors can also look really amazing when installed diagonally too. If the room is wider than it is long laying the flooring on the vertical will help create the illusion of length in the room and balance it out.
These are both good questions on insta. Vertical horizontal herringbone diagonal you have a number of choices for how your floor is laid as well as other factors to consider.
