Sleeping on your left side is often referred to as the ideal scenario during pregnancy.
Researchers are yet to find anything conclusive on which side is the best but ideally it should be the left. If you have always been a left sided sleeper you are one of the fortunate ones. Sleeping on your side is often more comfortable than sleeping on your back especially after about 16 weeks. Left side sleep during pregnancy has been shown to be beneficial in both pregnant and non pregnant individuals.
Left side sleep during pregnancy not only improves placental blood flow to the fetus it also enhances maternal circulation improving lymphatic drainage and gastric emptying. When the bloodflow to the heart decreases the heart pumps less blood. Sleeping in the same position during the whole night will not be comfortable so need to change the position from this side to the other but more left side lying is still the best way to have good health for both mother and baby. Why do doctors recommend sleeping on the left side during pregnancy. Your sleeping body should lie on your left side to allow more space for the ivc. You can also put a pillow under your abdomen to support your bump. Sleep on whichever side feels most comfortable.
